China Sees – Year-End Update

Below is a 2016 year-end update from our partner in China.  For their protection, they are referred to as Mr. and Mrs. Jones.

Wow – another year has passed! We are sure that many of you may feel the same way we do – where did the year go?

We write this update on New Years Eve, our time (we are 13 hours ahead of you), reflecting back on what has been an eventful year serving our Lord and Savior. As we shared with many of you during our time home in the Fall, 2016 was a “pivot year” for us both personally and in ministry. Personally, we grew deeply in our marriage. We say in America that “what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.” There were certainly times when we thought God’s sanctification of us through marriage might kill us … but by His grace it has made us stronger. We are thankful for those who God put in our path to help us in this journey – You know who you are!

Ministry wise, we completed the transition from a broad-based ministry model to one where we concentrate on serving a single club in a single location. This has been a difficult transition, but we are deeply committed to “the church” as God’s vehicle in the world in this dispensation. While we thought this might make our ministry life more manageable, the complete opposite has been true. The church can be a messy place, but the church is God’s means of displaying his glory – not only to mankind, but even more importantly in the “heavenly places” (Eph 3:10). So we consider it all joy as we encountered various trials (James 1:2). It has tested our faith and it has produced endurance! We pray that all of you have the joy of Christian support and fellowship that only the Church can provide.

Ministry Updategreat-wall

By God’s grace and sovereignty this “Priscilla and Aquila” ministry team (i.e. Mr. and Mrs. Jones) experienced some wonderful highlights in 2016, including:

  1. Church governance: We completed a year-long process of examination and preparation to install a plurality of male Elders to replace our Club’s 10-year “steering committee” structure. In March of 2016, five men were nominated to become Elders and, Lord willing, will be formally installed in the first quarter of 2017;
  2. Ministry Philosophy and Structure: One of the chief tasks for the Elder candidates was to develop a clear and biblical philosophy for ministry, along with a structure to support their ministry programs. The results of this 9 month effort was literally presented today (New Year’s eve day) at the Club’s annual general meeting;
  3. Expository Preaching: Completing a process that began in 2015, the Club fulfilled their goal to staff all of their preaching internally. Seven men committed to an intensive training process to learn the expository preaching method. We began with a series on Jesus’ sermon on the mount and then on to our first book – James. In November of this year, they began what will be a year long series on the book of Ephesians. In addition to preparing their weekly messages, the “speakers” prepare a Small Group Discussion Guide (SGDG) as a companion to their sermon. In 2016, a number of the Club’s Small Groups experimented with the SGDG using it to go deeper with an emphasis on applying the messages to their daily lives. What a blessing to see the Holy Spirit fill lay-leaders for this important ministry of the church. Remember, none of these men have had the privilege of formal theological training and ALL of them serve bi-vocationally! A testimony to being submitted to, and walking in, the Spirit;
  4. Biblical Counseling: Like many churches, there is a great need to counsel people on handling life biblically. Significant steps were taken to train an initial group of Biblical counselors – completed in 2016 – and then deploy them throughout the Club’s small group network – a work in progress;
  5. Bible Studies: Two women’s (singles, Mom’s group) Bible studies and one mixed Bible study commenced in 2016 – studying the book of Romans. It is a very new thing for this Club to participate in detailed verse-by-verse exposition of the Bible. It was pure joy to watch them experience slowing down and discovering the richness of God’s word;
  6. Personal discipleship: Both of us worked closely with a small number of key leaders in the Club, meeting on a regular basis to focus on growing in spiritual maturity and as Club leaders. Our home was filled with people most nights of the week – something new, and challenging, for both of us as the gift of hospitality is not a “natural” one. This started slowly, but by year end has started to yield some fruit.
  7. Celebration: 2016 marked the 10-year anniversary of this Club, which they celebrated with a “club wide” gathering … a first in their history. What a joyful time it was! What began as a small group Bible study has grown into a 350 person Club that conducts three weekend services, children’s and adult Sunday school classes, and 30 weekly small group gatherings. What a testimony to the power of God – and the faithfulness of these local saints. Again, let me remind you … not one paid staff member. Completely lay led. Quite remarkable really!

The forgoing were truly joyful highlights for us as we labored to be instruments in God’s hands throughout the year. But despite these highlights, we are not without struggles. We will address these in the praise and prayer section at the end of this report.

Ministry Outlook

So, what does 2017 look like?

In terms of focus, the group’s emphasis for 2017 is “back to basics.” The Chinese are hungry students and life long learners … this is a great starting point. Unfortunately, much of their learning is task oriented. That is, the focus is on “getting it done.” As a result, the leadership feels that people are not experiencing life change in proportion to their “knowledge acquisition.” To address this reality, our 2017 ministry focus has three priorities:

  1. Bible: The Club has issued a corporate read through the Bible challenge for 2017 that will be administered through their small groups. A team has been formed to prepare a “pre-reading” overview for each book of the Bible. This will be followed by a “what we learned” about God and what He wants for His children, and “what we do” with what God reveals and wants for His children summary of each book. A pretty daunting task – so pray for this team!! The small groups will devote a portion of their weekly gathering to share how that week’s reading touched their lives.
  2. Doctrine: The Club will initiate a doctrinal study and discussion in 2017. China is filled with all manner of false doctrine – much of it imported from America! The leadership feels that they need to give their sheep a better understanding of conservative Christian orthodoxy to discern false teaching and refute error. And to know what it is they believe and stand for if, and when, persecution comes.
  3. Practical holiness: This aspect of their “back to basics” focus will emphasize spiritual life practices – quiet times (Bible reading, devotional study, journaling), prayer (individual and corporate), serving the body, and sharing the gospel. The small groups will be the primary vehicle for implementation. This is where the leadership will work to promote real and enduring life change.

Corporately, the leadership team is making plans for planting their first Club. It is the passion of the Club’s leaders to be Club planters! Their first step in this journey is what we will call a “soft-plant.” Because of their growth and capacity limitations at their current gathering place, they cannot accommodate new people coming to faith. As a result, they plan to take approximately 1/3 of the current Club and establish a new – standalone – Club.

They want to plant independent children that can mature to become “reproducing parents.” Their goal is to hold their first service in late 2017 and then spend the balance of 2018 “fully separating” in terms of finances, governance, and other elements of co-dependency. Like human children, the “mother Club” hopes to impart essential DNA, but leave room for the children to develop on their own beyond those essentials. By God’s grace we will learn as we go in this endeavor – thus the 2-year plan.

Praise and Prayer Requests

  1. Praise for living accommodation: Upon returning to China we needed to find a new apartment as our current lease was expiring in January. To begin with, apartments are scarce and they are expensive relative to the quality. Last winter was simply miserable as our apartment did not have adequate heat. We prayed that God would provide a new place in the same general area of our current apartment – reasonably renovated, with HEAT, and reasonably priced!! As time was winding down, we learned of a couple in the Club that lived one block from our apartment that was being relocated to Singapore and wanted to rent their home. Net, net – their apartment was beyond every expectation that we had prayed for – at less rent!! God answered our prayer exceedingly … and provided something we didn’t ask for; a lower price. This turns out to be important as our mission board has needed to impose an administrative fee that cut into our monthly resources!
  2. Prayer for a potential division in the Club: One of the challenges we returned to is a group within the Club that wants to leave and form their own gathering. There is a lot of history with this group that is beyond the scope of this report. On the one hand their departure would solve a problem that has distracted and consumed leadership’s time and energy. On the other hand, if we truly love this group we should make every attempt to dissuade them from their error. In short this divisive action is a sinful choice driven by a hardness of heart. Please pray that the leadership might have the kind of wisdom that Solomon requested in 1 Kings 3:9 … namely, the understanding to discern between good and evil and judge rightly.
  3. Prayer for discernment as new religious policies are enacted: Over the past ten years, the church in China has experienced a period of peaceful coexistence and relative freedom to meet openly. This appears to be changing – both quickly and severely. The Chinese central government issued new religious regulations for comment over the summer. If enacted into law (very likely), they will lead to serious persecution and drive significant changes to the way the church, to be God’s church, has to operate in China. At the extreme, our group might be faced with breaking into their 30 small groups to avoid detection. Some recent activity in Hong Kong (late 2014), led by misguided Christians, has reignited the government’s sensitivity toward Christianity – both its influence on Chinese people and its perceived use by Western governments to foment insurgence. In short, the modest gains in semi-open Christian gatherings over the past ten years will be rolled back in a draconian fashion when these new regulations become enacted in March of 2017.                                                                         Please pray for discernment and protection for our Club. We will embark upon some concentrated planning in January in anticipation of these changes. The authorities in our location have historically taken a wait and see approach to new central government policy initiatives like this one, so we should have some time to do contingency planning and execute some trial runs on how to “get smaller” before the storm comes. That said, this is real and will likely change the landscape if God allows things to proceed. For us personally, it may result in changes to our ability to be here on a full-time basis. We have been told by credible sources that we may need to treat every month as if it could be our last month …
  4. Prayer for physical and spiritual endurance: Lastly, please pray for our physical and spiritual endurance. While only back for 2 ½ months, it seems like two years already. It is a privilege and a joy to do what we do – but the pace is extremely demanding and the needs are endless. And all of this will only get more intense as the aforementioned religious regulations become law. Pray that we can be sustained as we “work to complete the harvest” before the winter storm. Or even better – the storm does not materialize and things slow down!

As always it is our distinct privilege to be supported by you, enabling us to fulfill our call to be at the “tip of the spear.” Through your support you demonstrate the unity and diversity of the body, and this works together to accomplish His purposes (1 Cor 12). We are able to go … you are able to go with us by your gifts. We are most thankful!

Happy New Year … and remember those New Year’s repentances – Ps 51!

Our Love in the Lord,

Mr. and Mrs. Jones

Urgent: Help Needed!

Thank you so much for your prayers and support.  I am writing this email to share with you concern over the drought.  It is still a tremendous challenge, with many of our people going for days without food.  Our church has tried to feed a number of families who are in a desperate situation.  We have been able to buy some food and distribute it after the worship service, but this still leaves many without since it is little.  We also have the challenge of feeding our cows, goats, and pigs.

We are worried about what will happen in January when schools open.  We are praying for the rains and also for funds to be available to drive some distance to where they still have some food and buy for the next few months.  Even if it rains now, it will take four months for us to have food.

A strong wind blew the roof off of part of our school.  Two classes were affected.  Thankfully, God saved our children who were practicing for their Christmas Celebrations!  It will cost $620 to repair it before school opens.

Lastly, we need a well for our community.  With the population so high, the church borehole can no longer serve the well, particularly in this dry spell.  The hand pump well in our community would cost $3,100.

Thanks you as always for your prayers and care.  Merry Christmas to you and Happy New Year.

Harvesters Is Growing Again!

susySusy Rardon recently joined the staff of Harvesters as the Assistant to the Director. She worked for the last 13 years as the senior loan processor for a mortgage broker and knew that God was calling her into full-time ministry. As the missions coordinator for Grace Community Church in Hilton Head, South Carolina, she had many dealings with Harvesters. When God opened this door for ministry, she knew that this was where He was leading her.

As well as serving as missions coordinator, Susy also serves as the pianist and music coordinator for Grace Community Church. She lives in Bluffton, South Carolina, with two of her three children, Alli and Greg. Her oldest son, Zach, is married and lives with his wife, Nicole, in Davidson, North Carolina.

A Need for Discipleship

van_7618It has become evident that the preaching of the gospel is more needed than ever before. As a ministry, we have put it at the forefront of our activities. Over the last three months, I have traveled to meet with pastors around Rwanda, with the goal of reviving the spirit of discipleship in our congregations.

During my time of evangelism and church planting in these areas, I discovered that much emphasis is put on bringing in bigger numbers to the church, but less attention is given to them so they may become good disciples. This is not what the priority should be. We have begun training almost 40 pastors to lead discipleship classes. Each pastor will then disciple two people for six months and continue with a new group for another six months. I believe that this will take the church to another level of spiritual maturity as each of these new disciples begins to disciple others.

River of God Church held an evangelism campaign from July 1 to August 14. A number of activities were conducted, including prayer and fasting, home visitations, and a 14-day open-air crusade followed by a discipleship class. During the crusade, 621 people made professions of faith! Here are some of the transformations:

A woman arrived at the crusade carrying a 10-liter jerrycan full of alcohol. As the gospel was being preached, she threw the jerrycan down and ran to receive Jesus.

van_8446A Muslim man had been mistreating his wife since she became a Christian. After several days of hearing the gospel and testimonies of those who were once Muslims, he decided to give his life to Jesus. Today, the family lives with great joy.

A woman who had practiced witchcraft for many years lives near the crusade site. She heard the gospel while in her house through our loudspeakers and gave her life to Christ.

There is a spirit of revival in our community. Keep praying for Pallisa that the Lord will keep the fire burning and the new converts will have the hunger and thirst for the Word as they begin discipleship classes.

From The Field

Greetings in the name of our Lord! From the field, we would like to share our joys and challenges with you. We always count on your partnership as you help bear our burden through prayer and material support. Our unity of purpose on what God has embraced in our hearts shall one day be achieved.

Situation in South Sudan

The country remains in a state of uncertainty. The economic meltdown is unbearable for many. War, combined with hunger, has caused people to flee to refugee camps. The original peace agreement collapsed, and a modified version is now in effect. We still pray for God to bring enduring peace.

Ministry Update

The main church at Kapoeta is doing great. We were excited to hold our first baptism since the ministry began. We also had our first communion services, which we hope to hold on a regular
basis. This has breathed life and energy into our church.

church-building-2Construction of our church building resumed last month after a break. We expect that the structure will be complete with windows and doors by the third week of December. The flooring, paint, glass for windows, and other furnishings are still needed. We hope that it can be finished by next year, whenever God provides the funds needed for the last phase.

The church programs are running well. We have held seminars with several church groups including elders, youth leaders, evangelists, and worship
leaders. There has been great impact. Our evangelism team is taking the Gospel to the hospitals and prisons at least once a week. I had the opportunity to preach in the Kapoeta prison. Recently, one of those men was release from prison, and he came to church. His testimony was a great encouragement!

Our other preaching points in Riwotoo, Katiko, Lotien, and Mogos are going very well, with many seeing record attendance. We do not have a committed evangelist in Nanyia and are praying that God will raise up the right man for this village.

Education Program & Street Kids Ministry

Our educational program focuses on supporting needy children from our main church in Kapoeta, as well as a few from our preaching points. We are supporting 15 students in both primary and secondary schools, including some of the street kids.

Next year, we hope to take our educational program to our newest preaching point in Nachilakur. There is a school that has been closed down, and we are negotiating with the government education authorities to begin using the building. We are planning to recruit teachers, employ a watchman and cook so that the school can kick off when schools begin session early next year. Once the school is handed over to us, then believers and community members will also be able to use the classroom to conduct their services. We are praying for God to provide for our needs to run this school.

reuben-and-family-0916My Family

I thank you for your prayers for the safety of my family. My wife, Loice, and son remain in Kenya while the situation here is so dire. I thank God for the grace He has given that we could endure this situation that has forced the family to be apart for a while.

Prayer Requests

1. Pray for the peace in the country.

2. Pray for our ministry especially to new places like Nachilakur.

3. Pray for the funds needed to finish the church – approximately $17,000.

4. Pray for the school program kicking off next year. Pray for provision for the borehole that is needed.

5. Pray for Christmas celebration in each of our churches

Expanding Our Reach

We are so grateful that the Lord continues to provide opportunities for us to expand our reach around the world. Our Board of Directors has unanimously approved the addition of a new ministry partner, Sion Assembly Church Ministries (SAC), in Vijayawada, India.

SAC was established in 1993 by Rajendra Kumar Yellamelli. While most of Pastor Rajendra’s family was Hindu, his mother was a committed Christian. When he was 15 years old, she was rajendra-and-ravidiagnosed with cancer and given only a week to live. They fervently prayed for her healing, and the Lord completely healed her body! Once home from the hospital, she invited many of her Hindu neighbors to visit and hear what Christ had done for her. As a result, numerous lives were changed. After witnessing the Lord at work, Pastor Rajendra dedicated his life to the service of
the Lord and began preaching on the streets and in the slums while he was attending college. He is now joined in ministry by his wife, Suneetha, daughter Achsah, brother Ravi and his wife, Prathibha. Ministry is a family affair!  (Ravi and Rajendra pictured above)

The ministry has two churches with active, growing congregations. The original church in Vijayawada is led by Pastor Rajendra. They conduct Bible seminars and conferences, and provide training for pastors each month. Their focus is to train pastors and send them out to plant new churches.

Pastor Ravi leads the church in Kandrika. For many years, the congregation has conducted services in tents moving from place to place. Due to the large size of the congregation and increased persecution of Christians, they recently purchased land and plan to construct a large church with a baptismal pool. Approximately $50,000 is needed to complete the project and they are trusting that God will provide.

In 2010, they established an orphanage at the original church that currently houses 26 abandoned or orphaned children, but can accommodate up to 200. While they meet the basic needs of the children – food, shelter, education – the primary focus is to reach them with the love and care of Christ. As news spread through the community that the church was feeding and caring for the orphaned or extremely poor, many destitute widows began to arrive, begging for food. SAC began feeding them through the children’s home. These women would sometimes stay the night on the floor of the church. Seeing the need to empower these women to care for themselves, SAC set up a sewing center and began teaching them to sew. Lessons and use of the machines are free of charge, however, the women must earn money to pay for materials.

2015-12-31-23-18-07In 2017, SAC will open a Christian school. Many parents living in the slums want their children to be educated in English, as it provides the children with many more employment opportunities both at home and abroad. Schools in the area do not provide adequate teaching. SAC desires to build an English speaking school, with a Christian worldview, where Telugu (the native language) will be taught as a second language.

Reaching the 1.3 billion people of India, which are primarily Hindu, is a daunting task, but SAC has created numerous opportunities to serve the community and share the Gospel. In addition to their churches, SAC provides regular medical clinics in the slums for those that do not have access to, or cannot afford, medical care. They also perform relief work after natural disasters. In an effort to reach large groups, they regularly hold Gospel crusades and show the Jesus Film. Their widest reach comes from a daily television broadcast.

Join us in praying for Sion Assembly Church as we begin to work together for the cause of Christ in India!

GivingTuesday 2016

From the Field – Ministry Update

Some of you have had the opportunity to work with us in one of the three countries where we are spreading the Good News – Kenya, Uganda, or South Sudan.

In Kenya, we are currently equipping many new laborers. Ten evangelists have just graduated and are busy spreading the news, while another ten are in training. Pastors and church leadership are also busy learning strategies for taking the Gospel to other areas and casting vision for church planting. The goal is to make every believer a soul seeker in our ministry.

Orphanages

IMG_0954It is common for the grown orphans to think back and say that they cannot imagine what their lives would be like today if they had not been cared for in the orphanage. These are children that would have hardly been eating, hardly have clothes to wear, hardly have shelter, hardly be loved and therefore would hardly smile or laugh in the villages, and would have no hope in life. Today, God has moved some of these kids to universities and colleges, with some in medical school, law school, and teachers college. The nation of Pokot is beginning to see a source of future leadership in these kids. And so does POM! We see preachers, teachers, nurses, and other ministry workers coming from our orphanages. They have been given a spiritual foundation, and they love the Lord!

Water Drilling

When the Samaritan woman at the well asked Jesus if he was greater than their father, Jacob, who dug a well for them, she was expressing how water was such an important element in their society.

The water wells POM drills have become many things to the Pokot people. Because of the many good things water brings to a village, everyone in the village looks forward to having a well drilled.

Water wells are a great asset that God has given to us. Many people have come to Christ because of water. One well groups people together, gives clean water, allows women to rest from journeys finding water, saves babies from miscarriage, allows school kids to learn instead of looking for water, and stamps out disease. One well ignites a village of 2,000 to 4,000 to become lively and vibrant. Schools have started along with the churches that we try to plant with each well. The wells attract a crowd, and pastors have a ready-made gathering. While we rejoice over the positive things that water has brought to our ministry, we have a challenge. When God provides the finances, five to six boreholes can be drilled each month meaning that we need to have that many new preachers each month. Please pray with us for the Lord to send more men willing to lead these new churches.

Medical Mobile Clinics

When POM first started, the Pokot people wondered if the God of Christianity really saw their medical needs. I pointed them to seek first the Kingdom of God and that all of the rest of their physical concerns would be provided according to His will. Twenty years later, I can say that God has answered these prayers step by step and little by little over the years.

Mobile clinics have enabled us to go to places where no other medical services are available. Treating the physical ailments of the people opens the door for conversations about the Great Physician.

Conferences

Over the years, God has given us the opportunity to minister to Pokot women and youth with annual conferences. These week long meetings include fellowshipping, sharing testimonies, and hearing the Word preached. Hundreds of women and youth give their lives to Christ! They return to their villages and begin sharing the new hope that they’ve found. Each year these conferences grow and we trust that God will continue to move.

Please pray with us:

1. for the overwhelming need for more laborers to be trained

2. for safety in South Sudan

3. for God to provide a multipurpose center in Karita, Uganda

Loving Home, Happy Children

Each country has its own set of challenges when it comes to missions. Russia is no exception, with unusual amounts of red tape. A private Christian orphanage in Russia would not be possible or allowed by law. We believe the most effective way to help orphans in Russia is to equip Christian parents in Russia to care for abandoned children. This is accomplished by providing encouragement, housing, and financial support ranging from monthly support to one time gifts. For ten years, we have watched child after child come into one of the homes and be changed by the love that the house parents have shown. This summer we witnessed the baptism of two of the first girls that came to the homes!

We believe that placing a child in a home setting will produce the best long-term results. The emotions of a child coming from a government institution into the family setting at one of the HFL homes can be overwhelming! Their stories all start out differently – from being told to go eat out of the dogs dish, being burned by hot water, being born in prison, witnessing your mother’s murder – the heartbreaking stories go on and on.

While each story begins differently, once in an HFL home each child will soon begin to experience a love that only God could pour on them – a love that cares for their needs, introduces them to the greatest love of all, listens to their dreams, and gives each one a chance to become a part of God’s family. The family was established by God himself! The uniqueness of the HFL homes is that, collectively, God’s people give of their time and talent to provide a home setting for those who have no home.

Orphan care is a part of our ministry that reaches out to the many orphans that are in the institutional orphanages in Russia. We have been able to establish relationships with these orphans through visits by our field director and members of the local church. We minister to them through multiple methods, one of them being Christian Summer Camps.

Many orphans are given an opportunity to attend a 12-day summer camp that is operated by the local churches. Over the years, we have seen hundreds of orphans come to Christ! Many of them are being discipled and are now sharing their faith with others and leading them to Christ as well!

yuriyYuriy (pictured here) found himself at camp by God’s will when the orphanage administration replaced another child with him. He had never shown any interest in the Creator during church programs led by our field director. But the knowledge of God he received at the camp absolutely fascinated him! He asked for a Bible and later said that he has many questions on the book of Revelations that he will ask the pastor. Pray for him as he begins his faith journey.

Unfortunately, the Russian government has just passed a law that has made it illegal to share your faith in a home or public setting. Only time will tell how this law will affect the believers in Russia, but there is no doubt it leads the way for the government to make things very difficult for our house parents. Please pray for our parents and the children in their care.

REUNITED

Tanya, Daniel, and Lera are a sibling group now all living together in a Hope for Life home. Tanya was almost six and Daniel was eleven months old when their mother left their home to go out drinking and never came back. Tanya took care of her brother until they ran out of food in the house. They then took to the streets to beg. When authorities found them, they were taken to different orphanages. Thankfully, both were later taken in by the house parents at HFL. Lera was born in prison, and her mother abandoned her as soon as she was released. She too was taken into the same HFL home. Reunited, the siblings now have a loving and stable family. Though they still face emotional and physical challenges, they are thriving under the care of their new parents.
